A judge of the reality TV show on which Kolkata teenager Shinjini Sengupta was reportedly rebuked, leading to her breakdown, Tuesday defended himself and the others on the panel.

“We did not pull up anybody. We only advise, assess and judge the participants,” the judge, Ringoo, told reporters outside the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-sciences (NIMHANS) here where the 16-year-old Shinjini is being treated.

Nurses at Kolkata’s renowned Belle Vue hospital allegedly declared a baby stillborn, only to find him alive more than 7 hours later. Thirty-three-year-old Sangita Das who was admitted to Belle Vue hospital at night after going into labour three months early.

Teen cell phone use leads to 'careless' lifestyle

Mounting stress and sleepless nights are now associated with frequent use of mobile phones, a new Swedish study finds. Furthermore, teens addicted to their cell phones are placing their health at higher risks, the findings presented at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Baltimore hints.

To identify the links between cell phone usage and associated health risks, the study, SLEEP 2008, looked at 21 otherwise healthy teenagers, aged between 14 and 20 years. They had “regular working/studying hours” and were not previously diagnosed with any particular sleep irregularity, researchers pointed.

Fuel price hike to push inflation to 9 %

Inflation is bound to cross a 13-year high of 9 per cent, from the current level of 8.1 per cent, as a result of the sharp hike in petrol and diesel prices, economists said.

“Inflation could cross 9 per cent in the near term owing to the hike in petrol and diesel prices,” HDFC Bank chief economist Abheek Barua told PTI.

Besides, the base effect is also not favourable as the inflation is being calculated at the lower base, he said. The base effect relates to inflation in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Indian court clears exiled painter of obscenity

The Delhi High Court Thursday dismissed criminal proceedings against painter M F Husain, who lives in self-imposed exile in London and Dubai and was alleged to have hurt public sentiments through some of his paintings.

Giving relief to the 91-year-old painter, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said the allegations were baseless.

“A painter has his own perspective of looking at things and it cannot be the basis of initiating criminal proceedings against him,” Kaul said in his order.

Indian charged for AP girl's murder

A 24-year-old Indian national charged with the sensational murder of Samrajyo Jyothirmayee Vempala, a student from Andhra Pradesh at the Wolverhampton University, will be produced in the Birmingham Magistrates Court today (May 9).

Vijaywada-origin Jyothirmayee, 23, had succumbed to severe head injuries on Tuesday (May 6) while the suspect Nagaraja Kumar Nalluri, also an Indian student, was found seriously injured in the same private accommodation where she was living in Handsworth, a suburb of Birmingham.

Treat live-in partner, mistress on par with wifeâ€™

As far as the domestic violence law goes, a “live-in partner or mistress” is at equal par with a man’s wife, ruled the Delhi High Court today.

A Bench comprising Justices Vikramjit Sen and P K Bhasin has come to this conclusion on the presumption that invariably a “live-in” relationship with a woman would be on the initiation of the man.

The Division Bench stressed that it had found no compelling reasons to measure a legally-wedded woman and a live-in partner, both facing the ugly ends of domestic violence, with two yardsticks. “Like treatment to both (wives and mistress) does not, in any manner, derogate from the sanctity of marriage since an assumption can fairly be drawn that a live-in relationship is invariably initiated and perpetuated by the male,” the court said.
