This is very praise worthy move of Karnataka government for women of state. But it might not be good news for booming BPO and hotel industry in the state. Any step to ensure safety of women should be welcomed.

The Karnakata government’s plan to ban night shifts for women. According to the bill passed by Karnataka Assembly to ban night shifts for women in firms comes under the Karnataka Shops and Establishments Act. But IT companies and hospitals will be exempted from it. A section of society will definitely welcome the decision of government but some think that this move will work as hindrance in women’s progress. The chairperson, State Women’s Commission, Pramila Nesargi said,
It is not a progressive legislation. It is hindering the progress of ladies in one stretch of imagination.
The government is focusing on women working in hotel industry, shopping malls and recreation centers.
The hotel industry has reacted very sharply to this move. The general manager, Taj West End, P K Mohan Kumar said,
In the world we are living in today, we cannot egregated and isolated approach towards the women workforce.
Till now the bill is only passed in the Legislative Assembly and to become as an Act it should passed by the council and be ratified by the governor. So it’s long way to go. Anyway we should not forget about women’s reservation bill that is still under parliamentarian consideration. I mean our respected MPs failed to make any decision on it.
