Girls are still the unwanted child for some of the families in our country. I can not say when people will stop this discrimination towards females? In this recent case of injustice towards fairer sex which came into limelight at Nayagarh in Orissa where at least 30 female fetuses were pulled out of an abandoned well. Female infant's body parts found in Nayagarh
I don’t have words to define this unmerciful act. Body parts of approximately nearly 25 new-born babies were found in separate polythene bags. Although prenatal sex determination and selective abortion are banned, but who cares about law? Superintendent of Police, Nayagarh, Rajesh Kumar said,

We found skulls and bones in some biological waste. We have seized them and they have been sent for chemical examination.

The condition of sex ratio is the worst in Nayagarh district of Orissa. You can find only 901 females out of 1000 males. In most of the countries in the world, there are approximately 105 female births for every 100 males.
Just like other cases of female infanticide, two people working at one of the nursing homes at Nayagarh have been arrested and several others have been detained. I think, only arresting and detaing some people would not be enough to curb this anti-female drive that is very strongly rooted in our society.

Why literate families do not want girl child?
From many decades, women have low status as compared to men in India.
If you think about two prominent communities that is Hindu and Muslims, the condition of women is not good. Still, women rule in Kitchen only. She has fewer chances to get educated, doing jobs, taking decision within the family. I think this is because of the beliefs and values of society. Islam permits polygamy and gives women fewer rights than men. In Hindus, male child is necessary to perform funeral ceremony of his parents.
Beside this religious factor, some other cultural and economic factors are responsible for lowering the status of women. We all know, our legal system has no impact on the practice of dowry. So, selfish and greedy parents prefer to pay 500 Rupees for aborting the girl child rather than pay 50,000 Rupees or more (in dowry) later .
