The most of the investigations related to terror attacks on Pentagon, World Trade Center, and London airport etc. reveled that the people from Muslim community are directly involved in those incidents leaving many dead and injured. It is irony of situation that due to few fundamentalist Muslims, all the Muslims all around the world have been viewed as suspect of being part of terror organizations. Who can forget Dr. Mohamed Haneef who was one of the suspects behind the failed London and Glasgow bombings and interrogated for many days by Australian police. Later on the charges against him had been dropped.
The Muslims who doesn’t believe in fundamentalism, killing and haterated for other religion, finds himself in very scary, pathetic and agonizing situation. Perhaps this is praiseworthy move of Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the most influential theological schools in South Asia, which coined terrorism as anti-Islamic activity. In a convention attended by top clerics including the representatives from Ajmer Sharif Dargah, All India Madrasas association and All India Muslim personal law board, held in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP), India, on February 26 defined terrorism,
Any action that targets innocents, whether by an individual or by any government and its agencies or by private organisations anywhere in the world, constitutes, according to Islam, an act of terrorism.
The other purpose behind this convocation could be the growing disinterest of common young Muslims towards terrorism. If you look at the statistics, Islamic countries are suffering more due to terrorism than other nations of the world. Bomb blasts in Pakistan, which kill only Muslims, is now more often and more deadly than any other place in the world and even more than Iraq. If one calculates the number of Muslims loosing lives and limbs due to terrorism it is surely much more than casualties of non Muslims. If these Ulemas had not woken up now, very soon ordinary Muslims themselves would have condemned and given up terrorism. And in that process even these Ulemas would have lost grip on the Muslims and their abilities to control the vote banks. Look at Pakistan, a creator of many terrorist organizations is now reaping what it sows.
But I hope, this kind of meeting and declaration will help the young Muslims not to join the terror groups. It will also change the mindset of the people particularly in western countries that look the Muslims with suspicion.
